The Haus der Berliner Festspiele was opened in 1963 as the „Theater der Freien Volksbühne“ (Free People’s Stage Theatre) and is one of the best-known designs of the Berlin architect Fritz Bornemann. Leading directors and artistic directors such as Erwin Piscator, Kurt Hübner, Hans Neuenfels and Peter Zadek have made theatre history here. Since 2001, the Berliner Festspiele have extended this traditon with their regular programmes and international festivals. Through all these curatorial developments, the theatre’s technical resources have remained close to the level of the 1960s and will therefore receive a comprehensive overhaul in the coming months.
